Cardiovascular disease among YCS: impact of sociodemographic and modifiable risk factors
In a paper recently published in Cancer (Berkman et al., 2022), the researchers analysed the relationship between sociodemographic factors (sex, race/ethnicity, education level, household income) and modifiable risk factors (e.g., physical activity) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) among adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (ages 15–39 years). Data were collected from more than 4,700 survivors and more than 47,000 sex-matched controls. The results showed that sociodemographic factors and modifiable risk factors were associated with increased CVD risk within the cancer survivors. Interestingly, performing any moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) lowered the risk of CVD in survivors and controls (39% and 32%, respectively). However, one third of cancer survivors reported no MVPA. In conclusion, engaging cancer survivors in MVPA is particularly important because any amount of MVPA was associated with a lower probability of CVD in this population.
